Summer in St. Louis – Caring for your lawn

Whether you’re a native to St. Louis, or if you recently migrated to the area, you’ve most likely noticed the humidity and heat that comes with the Midwest summer. That’s why it is crucial to know how to care for your lawn during these intense summer months.

There are quite a few different grass types; including zoysia, bermudagrass, and tall fescue, just to name a few. It is important to know what type of grass your lawn is growing, so that you will be able to properly care for your turf.

You may think that any time of the day is fine for keeping your lawn moisturized; which would be incorrect. The best time to water your lawn here in St. Louis is in the early mornings before the temperatures rise too high. Watering your lawn before 10am is the most beneficial. If you were to water your lawn midday or afternoon, the water would evaporate too quickly from the grass, leaving the grass roots unsaturated. This would ultimately lead to a waste of your time and money. Furthermore, it is not a good idea to water your lawn at night; since water that sits on the grass leaves overnight could cause fungus growth in your lawn. Most lawns need at least one-inch of water per week, ensuring the water goes all the way down to the grassroots. Water your lawn deeply and less frequently in summer months.

More so, if you have pets that use your lawn, make sure to remove the pet’s waste as soon as possible by spraying the spot with water. Pet waste will cause added stress to your yard and could potentially cause browning.

St. Louis Lawn Care is dedicated to keeping your lawn healthy and attractive all summer long. Our prepaid, monthly membership mowing cycle ensures your lawn will be taken care of every week, once a week, for the duration of the month. Our lawn care professionals know the proper heights to cut your lawn during every season to keep it healthy and green. During the summer months, you should cut your lawn at a higher setting – this allows the grass to be more resistant to heat and drought.
